Writing Department of Defense grant to perform in-vitro studies comparing efficacy of docetaxel-bound MNPs to doxorubicin-bound MNPs, develop the first porcine model of metastatic prostate cancer to the spine, and test efficacy of the chemotherapeutic-bound MNPs to reduce tumor burden in the magnetic-cement kyphoplasty porcine cancer model. 2) Co-invented/patent-holder of fenestrated spinal rod system for targeted delivery of fluid in posterolateral fusion; co-wrote Chancellor’s Translational Research Initiative grant for biomechanical testing- awarded $25,000; writing Proof-of-Concept grant ($50,000) to examine efficacy of targeted delivery of non-opioid analgesia via fenestrated rod system vs. intravenous analgesia in reducing pain post-spinal fusion in a porcine model 3) Co-conceptualized/developed iPad application (CerDex) to quantitatively assess dexterity due to cervical myelopathy pre- and post-operatively. Co-wrote Report of Research Discovery (RRD) and IRB for clinical validation of app. Currently enrolling and testing in clinic patients. 4) Co-wrote IRB and RRD for development of Spine Detect, a software for quantitating changes in spinal instrumentation using AP and lateral X-ray films to detect hardware failure and pseudoarthrosis post-fusion earlier and more sensitively. Currently validating software 5) Conceptualized/co-designed a clear-field minimally-invasive spine (MIS) port with dual-suction and irrigation function. Wrote RRD and collaborating with Office of Technology Management (OTM) for IP analysis. 6) Co-conceptualized/designed a synthetic semi-rigid expandable cranioplasty bag for use post-craniectomy to obviate need for re-operative cranioplasty. The Scientific Coat Initiative for Future Innovators promotes students’ scientific passions for higher education, provides teachers the resources necessary for hands-on scientific instruction, encourages the growth of mentor-mentee relationships, and fosters a visible community supporting young scientists’ endeavors. We achieve these goals by partnering with corporate and academic sponsors who endorse the purchase of laboratory coats embroidered with the sponsors’ logos. We then distribute these coats to qualifying under-resourced schools, along with other materials intended to aid educators in taking on a hands-on approach to science instruction. Progress Update (1/15/18): Over the past few weeks, we have completed donations to three underfunded schools in California: De Marillac Academy in San Francisco, Trinity High School in Weaverville, and Richmond High School in Richmond. In total, we have provided over 150 lab coats and goggles as well as books entitled "Careers in Science" to these schools’ science programs. Currently, our executive team is working closely with our legal adviser to complete the paperwork necessary for 501(c)3 recognition. Also, last month our executive team worked with our colleagues at Stanford to establish our second university-affiliated Project SCIFI chapter. In the upcoming month, we will be onboarding a motivated group of students from the school. Update 3/15/18: Federally-recognized 501(c)(3) status.
